The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant James Henry Roberts (ASN: 557227), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 39th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon, France, September 26 to 28, 1918. Sergeant Roberts displayed marked courage and self-sacrifice, when, after being wounded in the arm, he refused to leave the battle field and continued to perform his duties as platoon sergeant until he was wounded in the knee two days later and had to be carried from the field.
