The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Charles Clayton Rissmiller (ASN: 571132), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 4th Engineers (Attached), 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Thibault, France, 5 August 1918. Private Rismiller went forward exposed to intense rifle, machine-gun, and artillery fire and assisted a seriously wounded comrade to a place of safety, thus saving his life. In the performance of this gallant act Private Rismiller was mortally wounded.
