    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class William Jennings Rinebold (ASN: 8168), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Section No. 524, Ambulance Service, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fismes, France, August 8 – 9, 1918, Private Rinebold volunteered and acted as guide for ambulances going to the most advanced points for the wounded. He made nine trips over a road subjected to heavy shell and machine-gun fire and was severely wounded by a shell fragment on his last trip.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class William J. Rinebold (ASN: 8168), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private First Class Rinebold distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Section No. 524, Ambulance Service, American Expeditionary Forces, in action between St. Gilles and Fismes, France, 8 – 9 August 1918, in giving aid to the wounded under enemy fire. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 9 (August 1, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]
