The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Henry Clayton Richman (ASN: 52301), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vaux, France, July 1 – 2, 1918. Private Richman moved through heavy woods alone under heavy machine-gun fire, flanking dug-outs, from which 12 German prisoners were taken. In the action of July 16 – 18, 1918, near Soissons, France, while showing the same fearless qualities, he was killed.
