The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class James T. Rice (ASN: 570794), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 8th Field Signal Battalion, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near the Bois-du-Fays, France, 29 September 1918, and in the Bois-de-Malaumont, France, 11 to 13 October 1918. While at work with a group of men maintaining telephone communication, Private Rice went out under heavy fire and carried to shelter a comrade who had been wounded by a bursting shell, returning immediately and repairing breaks in the line. During the action in the Bois-de-Malaumont, he repeatedly exposed himself to heavy artillery and machine-gun fire in order to maintain telephone lines for the infantry, displaying remarkable courage.
