The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Carl Clark Rice, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 5th Machine-Gun Battalion, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 6 June 1918, near Chateau-Thierry, France. In command of a machine-gun section, Second Lieutenant Rice was wounded soon after the advance began, but refused to have his wound dressed for fear it would delay the movement. He bravely continued to lead the section until he fell from exhaustion.
