The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) William G. Reynolds, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne, France, 4 October 1918. After Captain Reynolds had been severely wounded by a shell, he managed by a supreme effort to regain sufficient consciousness to acquaint his successor with the necessary information for the continuance of the struggle. His courage, under such great agony, set a most wonderful example for his men.
