The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Newton Rex (ASN: 1521455), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 146th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon, France, 27 September 1918. Leading a patrol of 12 men from his own and another company, Corporal Rex encountered 35 of the enemy in a ravine. Under terrific enfilading fire from seven machine-guns, he led an attack on the enemy in which five of the latter were killed and 15 captured, together with seven machine-guns.
