The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) Charles C. Rentfro, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 109th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at St. Agnan, France, July 15 – 18, 1918. First Lieutenant Rentfro went without sleep in order to care for the wounded, and performed his work fearlessly without shelter under continuous bombardment.
