The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Fred Allen Renick (ASN: 9412), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Section No. 598, Ambulance Service, American Expeditionary Forces, near Beauvois, France, on 4 April 1918. Private First Class Renick was ordered to drive his ambulance to a dressing station. The road over which it was necessary to pass was under continuous shell fire. On his way to the dressing station he received a slight wound. In spite of the wound, which was dressed at a dressing station, he resumed his post, and on the return trip a shell struck his car, seriously wounding him and killing his passenger.
