    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Charles Reiter (ASN: 1245045), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Apremont, France, 1 October 1918. Sergeant Reiter and a companion exposed themselves to heavy machine-gun fire and advanced in front of our lines to assist a wounded soldier to a place of safety. In the attack on Hill 244, on 8 October 1918, after the officers had become casualties he assumed command of a unit and displayed unusual ability and leadership, until severely wounded.
