By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Cecil E. Reed (ASN: 2201115), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private First Class Reed distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 353d Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Bois de Barricourt, France, 2 November 1918, in pushing forward and by accurate firing of rifle grenades succeeded in holding down the fire of the enemy and enabling his platoon to advance.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Cecil E. Reed (ASN: 2201115), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 353d Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Barricourt, France, 2 November 1918, When the advance of his platoon was held up by severe machine-gun fire, Private Reed left cover, advanced across open ground and opened fire on the enemy nest with rifle grenades. After twice returning to obtain more grenades, he succeeded with a well-directed shot in driving the enemy crew from the nest, whereupon they were killed by other members of his company.
