The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Jacob Recktenwald (ASN: 1784788), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Gibercy, France, November 7 – 10, 1918. On the night of 7 November Sergeant Recktenwald risked his own life in heavy artillery fire, going from shell hole to shell hole helping his wounded comrades. On November 10 he distributed rations to the men of his company under shell and machine-gun fire.
