The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Medical Corps) John Edwin Ray, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 119th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. Establishing his first-aid station in the front line, Captain Ray advanced with the infantry. He continued on with the troops, caring for the wounded, until he himself was so badly wounded that he was evacuated. He died from his wounds a few days later.
