The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Earl Edmond Ramsey (ASN: 2176548), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 353d Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near the Barricourt Woods, France, 2 November 1918. Sergeant Ramsey was leading the first section of a combat platoon when it encountered machine-gun fire of such intensity that the entire advance was threatened. Realizing the gravity of the situation he stepped out into the open ahead of his men in order to direct them more effectively, inspiring them by his bravery. He was seriously wounded a few minutes later.
