The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Nizel Rafalsky (ASN: 1286789), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Sanitary Detachment, 115th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, October 9 – 12, 1918. During the drive in which this regiment took part in the vicinity of the Meuse, Sergeant Rafalsky displayed great courage and presence of mind in attending to the wounded, not only of the organization to which he was attached but also of those in adjoining organizations. The exceptionally valuable service performed by this soldier was done under heavy shell and machine-gun fire.
