The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John Rachek, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Trugny, France, 22 July 1918. Although he had been twice wounded, First Lieutenant Rachek refused to be evacuated and continued on duty with his company during the attack and capture of Trugny under heavy fire until he was incapacitated by a third wound.
