The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Ferdinand Hans Henry Prien (ASN: 101852), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 168th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Beney, France, 12 September 1918. While advancing with his platoon Corporal Prien located a well-defended enemy machine-gun nest manned by fourteen men.
