The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Edward J. Powers (ASN: 1391424), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-du-Fays, France, 9 October 1918. After being wounded, Private Powers received treatment at a first-aid station, from where he was consigned to the hospital. Throwing away his evacuation ticket, he returned to the front line, where he acted as runner until the company was relieved, when he was removed to a hospital.
