Captain (Infantry) Platner distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Nouart, France, 2 November 1918, and by his brilliant leadership of his battalion.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Aaron Andrew Platner, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Medeah Ferme, France, October 3 – 9, 1918. Captain Platner repeatedly led his battalion against machine-gun nests’, through terrific enemy bombardment, until his objectives were attained. During the progress of the attack, when his men were being cut down by hidden fire, he personally located the gun and shot the gunner. His gallant example to his troops was an important factor in the success of the attack.
