The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Earl Henley Perkins (ASN: 1388545), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Meuse-Argonne offensive, 26 September 1918. With three other soldiers, Sergeant Perkins, on his own initiative, crawled across an open field, subjected to intense artillery and machine-gun fire, flanking three machine-gun positions, which were holding up our advance. The mission was successful, seven Germans being killed by the patrol and 23 captured and three machine guns captured.
