The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Byron R. Perkins (ASN: 155533), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Engineers, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Soissons, France, 20 July 1918. When volunteers were called for by his company commander, Private Perkins volunteered and rescued wounded comrades from a barrage. Disregarding danger to himself, he ‘continued the performance of these heroic deeds until killed.
