The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Percy R. Pearce, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 2d Infantry Brigade, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during a violent attack from artillery and machine-guns at Berzy-le-Sec, France, 21 July 1918. While serving as liaison officer First Lieutenant Pearce fearlessly exposed himself, exceeding the demands of duty to assist in reforming units that had been disseminated in battle and directing them to effective positions.
