By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class John Paul (ASN: 8165), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private First Class Paul distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Sanitary Service Unit No. 524, Ambulance Service, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Very, France, 9 August 1918, in evacuating the wounded over a shell swept road for a period of fifteen hours. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 9 (August 1, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]
