Chaplain Patrick distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Letanne, France, 1 – 7 November 1918, in assisting in caring for the wounded under heavy enemy fire.

During this period Chaplain Patrick constantly exposed himself to the enemy fire, while giving first aid to the wounded and assisting in their evacuation.
