    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Horace Flint Ortt (ASN: 1377601), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery C, 123d Field Artillery, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Very-Epinonville Valley, northwest of Verdun, France, 4 October 1918. Private Ortt volunteered to carry an important message to a position under heavy enemy fire, realizing in advance that he was exposing himself to unusual dangers in this undertaking. He continued in his task until killed by an enemy shell.

Ortt (ASN: 1377601), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Ortt distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 123d Field Artillery, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action 4 October 1918, in the Very-Epinonville Valley, northwest of Verdun, in carrying an important message to the battery commander under heavy enemy fire. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 8 (March 1, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]
