The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Ira C. Ogden, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne, France, October 9 – 10, 1918. Due to casualties among field officers, Captain Ogden was placed in command of the support line. On the afternoon of 10 October an advance was ordered, and Captain Ogden requested permission to accompany the front line. He was placed in command of the front line of the regiment and advanced with it at 4:30 p.m. Regardless of personal danger, he crossed areas swept by machine-gun fire, and was killed in action shortly after he had reported as having reached the objective.
