The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Daniel O’Connor (ASN: 60196), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Verdun, France, 27 October 1918. Encountering strong machine-gun nests while leading his platoon forward. Sergeant O’Connor ordered his men to take cover while he advanced alone, flanked the nest, and killed two of the enemy gunners, thereby enabling his platoon to resume the advance.
