    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Marsh W. Nottingham (ASN: 1550025), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters Company, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Nottingham displayed conspicuous conduct in battle near Roncheres, France, 29 July 1918, at the forward observation post in carrying messages under heavy enemy shell fire before telephone communications was established, and on 31 July 1918, near the same place, volunteering to guide another party to the observation post and displaying extraordinary heroism under heavy shell fire, until he himself was killed by an enemy shell. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Marsh Whitney Nottingham (ASN: 1550025), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 76th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Roncheres, France, 30 July 1918. Corporal Nottingham volunteered and carried messages through the intense shelling before telephone communication was established. While leading a party to an observation post, Corporal Nottingham was killed by shell fire.
