The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Clarence George Noble, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 128th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Gilles, France, 3 August 1918. Lieutenant Noble voluntarily exposed himself to heavy shell fire in placing his men under cover during a heavy bombardment. While assisting a wounded soldier he was struck by a shell and killed.
