The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Willie Harrison Nims (ASN: 1311282), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 118th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montbrehain, France, 8 October 1918. After all his company officers had been wounded, Sergeant Nims, though himself wounded in the leg by shell fire, assumed command and led his company with remarkable dash through heavy machine-gun fire. Using a stick as a crutch, he continued forward until the objective was reached and the position consolidated, when he consented to go to the rear for treatment.
