    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Jules Mangold (ASN: 553259), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, First Sergeant Theodore A. Dell, Corporal Jules Mangold, Sergeant Ezra M. Muse, and First Lieutenant Donald Swain remained on position through an extremely violent bombardment until ordered to withdraw from position after having two men killed and eight wounded. These men showed exceptional devotion to duty in the woods below Les Biez Ferme, France, on 1 July 1918.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Ezra Monroe Muse (ASN: 553231), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 7th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Chateau-Thierry, France, May 31 to 4 June 1918. While commanding a machine-gun in a building which had been struck three times, Sergeant Muse remained at his post, though told he might leave, because he had a better field of fire from this building tan could be obtained elsewhere.
