The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant William A. Munroe (ASN: 1303), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 125th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Sergy, France, July 28 to 2 August 1918. Sergeant Munroe voluntarily left his aid station and went to the field of action to deliver first aid to men in the most advanced positions. He tended the wounded under the most intense machine-gun and shell fire, and successfully carried a large number to places of comparative safety. His courage and cheerfulness under such hazardous circumstances did much to keep up the spirits of both the wounded whom he served and the men fighting in that vicinity.
