    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Ray H. Mullins (ASN: 544924), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Machine Gun Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Mullins was in charge of a section of machine guns north of Crezancy, France, on 25 July 1918. He fired one of the guns himself after the crew had been bombed out of their emplacement by the enemy coming up in the rear, and, although he had one hand almost shot off, he continued to fire on the enemy with the aid of one man as leader. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Ray H. Mullins (ASN: 544924), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Crezancy, France, 15 July 1918. After his gun crew had been bombed out of the emplacement by the enemy coming from the rear, Sergeant Mullins continued with the aid of one man, to fire his gun, even after his hand had been wholly shot off.
