The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Clayton Henry Moore (ASN: 1450720), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 138th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the attack on Hilsenfirst, France, 6 July 1918. While carrying a wounded soldier through machine-gun fire to shelter, Corporal Moore was wounded, but by unusual pluck he brought his comrade to safety, and, realizing the scarcity of stretchers, insisted on others being carried to the rear and himself walking.
