By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Henry J. Mongeau, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Mongeau distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 28th Infantry, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during World War I. Corporal Mongeau was a member of a patrol which, with audacity and courage, entered the enemy’s trenches, surprised and attacked an outpost of ten men, killing one, wounding one and capturing four.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Henry J. Mongeau (ASN: 58464), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Seicheprey, France, 28 March 1918. Corporal Mongeau was a member of a patrol consisting of an officer and four men, who, with great daring, entered a dangerous portion of the enemy trenches, where they surrounded a party nearly double their own strength, drove off an enemy rescuing party, and made their way back to our lines with four prisoners, from whom valuable information was taken.
