The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Peter T. Monahan (ASN: 1272997), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 111th Machine-Gun Battalion, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 11 October 1918. During an intense bombardment, Private Monahan volunteered to leave cover and assist in carrying a litter supporting a wounded officer. He was himself killed while engaged on this self-sacrificing mission.
