The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Phillip Miller (ASN: 1314485), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 118th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vaux-Andigny, France, 13 October 1918. Seeking shelter with his company from the severe artillery and machine-gun fire of the enemy, Private Miller entered a shell hole. Here he found a severely wounded soldier, and without hesitation carried the man 50 yards under plain view of the enemy and exposed to terrific fire to a place of safety with some of his company.
