The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) John C. Miller, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 2d Engineers, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Lucy-le-Bocage, France, June 19 – 20, 1918. About midnight, with a few volunteers, Second Lieutenant Miller entered a woods heavily shelled and gassed, and recovered two wounded members of his platoon.
