The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Daniel Sheridan McSweeney (ASN: 2705993), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ivoiry, France, 27 September 1918. Leaving a place of shelter, Sergeant McSweeney voluntarily crawled about 400 yards in advance of the front-line elements of his battalion and attempted to rescue a wounded officer. He then crossed an area swept by intense enemy machine-gun fire and attempted to capture an enemy machine gun which was causing heavy casualties in his company. While so engaged he was severely wounded by enemy fire.
