The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal John J. McLoughlin (ASN: 91270), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Villers-sur-Fere, France, on 28 July 1918. Without assistance Corporal McLoughlin cleared out a farm house, killed four of the enemy, took one prisoner, and held the position by himself until support arrived. Prior to this he had left shelter to give first aid to a comrade who was lying severely wounded in the open.
