The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Comerford McLoughlin, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 369th Infantry Regiment, 93d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Ripont, France, 26 September 1918. In command of a company of his regiment during the assault on the enemy’s position Lieutenant McLoughlin voluntarily exposed himself to a concentration of enemy machine-gun and artillery fire, made his way with great difficulty over rough and broken ground, and rescued his wounded battalion commander and his battalion adjutant and several wounded enlisted men, all of whom he carried to a dressing station, thus undoubtedly saving their lives. The undaunted courage and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant McLoughlin inspired the men of his regiment to great endeavors.
