The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry), [then Lieutenant] Maurice Joseph McGuire, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Agnan, France, 16 July 1918. Although painfully wounded shortly after his platoon began an attack, Captain McGuire refused to be evacuated until his command was ordered to withdraw. He then saw that their position was firmly held before going to the rear for treatment. His personal heroism was an inspiration to his men.
