The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private James McGuire, Jr. (ASN: 1902288), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 326th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Juvin, France, 17 October 1918. With exceptional gallantry, Private McGuire voluntarily went out into an area swept by heavy machine-gun fire to rescue a wounded sergeant, and succeeded in carrying the latter a considerable distance through heavy fire to a first-aid station.
