The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant William Joseph McGlinchey (ASN: 1696992), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Carrefour-de-Meurrussons, France, 26 September 1918. While his platoon was being heavily bombarded, Sergeant McGlinchey left his place of safety and quiet to rescue a wounded comrade. In attempting this valiant deed, Sergeant McGlinchey lost his own life.
