By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant James E. McFadden (ASN: 551132), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, on 15 July 1918, Sergeant McFadden encouraged his squad in holding their position on the river although almost completely surrounded until his whole squad had been killed or wounded and he himself had been wounded. He then reported back to his platoon leader and kept liaison between the platoon leader and the Company Commander, refusing to go to the rear to have his wound dressed. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
