The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal John F. McDonough (ASN: 2357286), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Nantillois, France, 30 September 1918. Upon being wounded in the arm, going through a heavy artillery barrage. Corporal McDonough refused to go to the rear for first aid, but dressed his wound himself, remaining in command of his platoon section until he was killed by shell fire.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal John F. McDonough (ASN: 2357286), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company B, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal McDonough displayed great courage and devotion to duty on 30 September 1918, near Nantillois, France, after he had been wounded in the arm while going through a heavy artillery barrage, and refused the opportunity of going to the rear to have his wound dressed. He dressed his own wound and remained in command of his platoon section until he was killed by the same barrage. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
