    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant First Class Francis P. McDermott (ASN: 8144), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant First Class McDermott distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Section No. 524, Ambulance Service, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Fismes, France, 8 August 1918, in directing the evacuation of the wounded under terrific shell fire. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 9 (August 1, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant First Class Francis Patrick McDermott (ASN: 8144), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Section No. 524, Ambulance Service, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fismes, France, 8 August 1918. Sergeant McDermott remained on duty for 30 hours, guiding and directing the ambulances to and from the most advanced points. He volunteered and acted as stretcher bearer in full view of the enemy and under heavy machine-gun fire. At one point he cleared the road of debris, under machine-gun fire, and guided ambulances to the wounded.
