The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant William James McDade (ASN: 1306965), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Geneve, France, 8 October 1918. While advancing with his platoon on the morning of 8 October Sergeant McDade was seriously wounded in the hip, but insisted upon remaining with his platoon. He was again wounded twice by machine-gun fire, but continued to the objective, where he materially aided in consolidating the position. He was then ordered to the aid station by his commanding officer, and was later evacuated to the hospital.
