By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Mechanic Sherman B. McCombs (ASN: 1452462), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Mechanic McCombs distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 138th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Baulny, France, 28 September 1918, in volunteering to reconnoiter the front lines. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 8 (March 1, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Mechanic Sherman B. McCombs (ASN: 1452462), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 138th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Baulny, France, 28 September 1918. When volunteers were called for to ascertain the location of the regiment on the left of his own, Mechanic McCombs immediately responded, and, passing through direct machine-gun and artillery fire, accomplished this dangerous mission with complete success.
